LINDEN, NJ — U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) joined Congregation Anshe Chesed in Linden for a meaningful conversation about the critical issues facing the Jewish community, including the rise of antisemitism in New Jersey and across the country, the U.S.-Israel relationship, and the ongoing Israel-Hamas hostage crisis.

“With so much hate and antisemitism spreading across our state, it is more important than ever that we stand together as a united community to support one another—just as this congregation has done in Linden for more than 105 years,” said Congressman Gottheimer, the only Jewish member of New Jersey’s Congressional delegation. “Partisan politics must not distract us from our shared values—defeating terrorism, standing up for democracy, and protecting the innocent.

The event was attended by Englewood Deputy Mayor Elie Katz, and Rabbi Joel Friedman. Rabbi Yosef Katz, Rabbi of Anshe Chesed opened the evening with prayers for the hostages and the State of Israel, and then spoke, emphasizing the importance of maintaining faith and trust in God during these difficult times. Teaneck Deputy Mayor Elie Katz introduced Congressman Gottheimer, describing him as both a close friend and a dedicated public servant. He commended the Congressman for his work ethic and attentiveness to local issues.

Following the Congressman’s speech, the floor was opened for a Q&A session, where attendees raised questions on topics such as the hostage crisis, affordability, congestion tolls, and national unity. Gottheimer highlighted the bipartisan cooperation in Congress, stating, “Despite what we see in the news, we do collaborate and have passed many bipartisan bills. The future of our country is bright, and I remain optimistic.”

The approximately 100 attendees appreciated Gottheimer’s attentiveness to both national and local concerns. Rabbi Katz, who hosted the event, expressed gratitude for the Congressman’s engagement, stating:

"As a growing community that deeply cares about New Jersey, the rise of antisemitism, and the high cost of living, it was refreshing and truly appreciated that the Congressman took time from his busy schedule to address us. He reassured us that these concerns are his priorities as well. In these challenging times, as antisemitism continues to rise locally, it is heartening to know that we have partners in the federal government who maintain open communication with us. We want to thank the congressman and his staff for joining us.
