(Courtesy of Anshe Chesed) Anshe Chesed of Linden opened this year’s “Behind the Scenes of Jewish Life” series with a deeply engaging and well-attended program that explored the inner workings of Jewish law, ethics and real-world decision making. On Thursday, Nov. 6, Rabbi Kalman Laufer delivered an insightful shiur examining the moral, ethical and halachic challenges that arise when making decisions on behalf of individuals who are no longer mentally capable of doing so.
The evening guided participants through complex and sensitive questions: What does it mean to truly understand? How do we assess competence? What responsibilities fall on family members and caregivers? And how does halacha offer clarity in moments when people cannot advocate for themselves?
The discussion touched on the emotional weight of these situations as well. As Rabbi Yosef Katz noted, “These discussions are hard, especially around such painful topics, but they are critical to have because of their importance in ensuring dignified and proper care later when needed.”

The shiur transitioned into a broader conversation about halachic advanced directives, highlighting the need for families to be prepared and informed before a crisis arises. Participants expressed strong interest in practical guidance and next steps.
In response, Anshe Chesed is now working to bring Rabbi Laufer back for a hands-on workshop that will walk community members through the concepts and help them complete a legally binding halachic advanced directive. The workshop will serve as an important and timely continuation of the conversation begun at this impactful opening event.
